I ended my 3-day venture in high-end Nordic cuisine at the communal table of Oaxen Krog** in the Djurgården district of Stockholm.

Since 1994 the owners Magnus Ek and Agneta Green ran a seasonal fine-dining restaurant on Oaxen, one of the southern islands in the Stockholm archipelago.

Their närhet principle still holds true: the cooking of Oaxen Krog is very nature-orientated with a lot of produce form their own farm and sourcing best local and regional produce in line with their own values – selected based on origin, sustainability and a humane animal keeping.

Oaxen Krog has a 6-course or 10-course tasting menu (SEK 1.800-2.100 / € 187-220) and the wine pairing is SEK 1.200-1.400/ € 125-147.

Accompanied with great food and wines, there were lots of laughs, stories and memories shared between these strangers collectively undergoing the Oaxen Krog experience and having a doubtlessly memorable night.

Oaxen Krog, also known as Oaxen Krog & Slip, previously Oaxen Skärgårdskrog, is a restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden.

It was started as a luxurious restaurant in the southern part of Stockholm archipelago, situated on the island Oaxen, south of the inlet to Södertälje Canal.

[1] It closed in September 2011 and in 2013 the new Oaxen Krog & Slip opened near Beckholmsbron at Djurgården in Stockholm in a new building by architects Mats Fahlander and Agneta Pettersson.

[2] Oaxen Krog has a sister restaurant Oaxen Slip which is in the same building and is a bistro.

The couple previously also ran a deli shop, Oaxen Skafferi, at Mariatorget in Stockholm.

One of the strongest sets of players in that mix is the chef Magnus Ek and his wife, Agneta Green, who closed Oaxen, the restaurant they’d founded in 1994 on its namesake island in the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago, and moved to a striking new water’s-edge location on Djurgarden, an island in central Stockholm, last May.

At Oaxen Krog, the chef serves ambitious six- and 10-course tasting menus, while Oaxen Slip, his casual-dining restaurant next door, offers dishes like deep-fried herring with herb vinegar.

“Oaxen Slip is about having a good time with friends in an easygoing environment, while at Oaxen Krog the food is intended to be the focus of the experience,” Mr. Ek said.

These simple visuals serve as a preview to Mr. Ek’s cooking philosophy at Krog, which intends to quietly exalt his ingredients through a posture of gastronomic humility.

Those seafood dishes were generally more interesting than Mr. Ek’s meat ones, though a heather-roasted saddle of lamb with pickled chives, warm lamb lard and puréed leeks had an alluring rustic elegance.
