Friends Arena Stadium - AIK Fotboll | Football Tripper

Review analysis
food   value   ambience   location

Friends Arena was constructed over a three year period between 2009 and 2012 in order to replace the ageing Råsunda Stadium which previously served as both the home  to the Swedish National Team, and AIK Fotboll.

Originally there were plans to locate the new national stadium next to the Ericsson Globe in a move which would have been similar to Wembley, and Wembley Arena, however the Swedish Football Association opted for a more affordable site in Solna.

Designed with a retractable roof similar to Amsterdam Arena, and Wale’s Millennium Stadium, the stadium is capable of accommodating up to 65,000 during indoor concerts, and 50,653 football fans per match.

Guided stadium tours of Friends Arena are available to the general public several times throughout the year on an inconstant basis.

Friends Arena sits within the suburb of Solna approximately 6.7km away from Stockholm’s historic city centre The stadium’s address for satnav is as follows: Due to the dense urban location and lack of parking spaces, driving to Friends Arena isn’t recommended.

Drinking in Gamla Stan itself is quite expensive - expect to pay around 60 SEK for a 500 ml lager in a cheap pub, rising to 95 SEK for a microbrew beer in a nice pub.

The Old Town contains several low-cost hostels.

Most of the Old Town is pedestrian-only.
