Today Nya Carnegiebryggeriet is opening – a new and modern craft brewery in the F-marked Luma factory in Hammarby Sjöstad, with its own restaurant.

Nya Carnegiebryggeriet is a revival of the Carnegie Brewery, a 178-year-old brand that is the oldest trademark in Sweden.

Attending the event were Marc Jensen, CEO of Carlsberg Sweden, as well as Brooklyn Brewery’s GM Eric Ottaway, Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and co-founder Steve Hindy.

Nya Carnegiebryggeriet is the very first overseas joint venture with an American brewery, an exciting example of how far beer has come in the U.S. and the world.

The Swedish-based staff of New Carnegie has been hired by and trained at Brooklyn Brewery under Garrett Oliver.

Brooklyn Brewery, in partnership with our Swedish importer Carlsberg, christened our new brewery in the Hammarby neighborhood of Stockholm.

Over the last two years, we’ve worked with our Swedish friends to develop a new line of beers under the banner of Nya Carnegiebryggeriet (aka, New Carnegie Brewery).

Since then, our Brooklyn brewers have been back and forth to Europe, working with our Swedish team, under GM Fredrik Vogel and Head Brewer Anders Wendler to get them up and running.

The brewery will be ground zero for an exchange of ideas, techniques and styles between our Brooklyn brewers and our Stockholm team.

Speaking of the team, here’s their names: Head Brewer Anders Wendler, general manager Fredrik Vogel, and brewers Josefine Karlsson, Christoffer Thurgesson, and Karl Fornarve.

Conceived by Bjorn Jakobson, the founder of BabyBjorn, this modern art complex opened in 2012 with genre-busting exhibitions in a gorgeous waterfront location that’s only a 20-minute bus ride from the city center.

The chefs Jacob Holmstrom and Anton Bjuhr earned their first Michelin star last year for their elegant New Nordic restaurant, Gastrologik.

But that began to change last year when the two-Michelin-starred chef Bjorn Frantzén opened an interconnected complex with a decadent gastro pub (called the Flying Elk) and three tipple-specific bars on one block.

Start the night at Corner Club, the stylish street-level cocktail bar serving concoctions like the Northern Navy (Swedish Herno gin, lime and grapefruit cordial; 129 kronor).

The formerly rough neighborhood of Hornstull, on the western edge of Sodermalm, boasts new restaurants and cafes, a sparkling shopping complex, and two newly constructed plazas that anchor the revitalized area.

Off the beaten path for many travellers, this former industrial wasteland turned award-winning urban eco district is worth a visit to check out its impressive energy-saving modern architecture (designed to reduce heat consumption) or to bike along its pristine waterfront cycle lanes.

To quench your thirst, make a stop at craft beer bar Nya Carnegiebryggeriet.

If you don’t hire a city bicycle (note they’re only available during the summer), pick up the three-minute free ferry over from Södermalm or jump on a tram from Gullmarsplan station to get there.

Time Out tip: If you’re not in the mood for a beer, soak up the atmosphere for free with a stop on the curved wooden seating deck on the waterfront next to Lugnets Allé.
