Lilla Ego - Stockholm Food Stories
ambience food staff location menu
It is really hard to compare this restaurant to that many others, this place certainly has its own vibe as well as direction of the food.
Daniel Räms and Tom Sjöstedt are the chefs behind this unpretentious and casual restaurant.
But that all ads up to a place that feels so much more personal than many other restaurants, the raw brick walls, white tiles, simple wooden tables and white wooden chairs all capture the essence of the restaurant brilliantly.
The plating is just artistic and could easily fit into a fine dining restaurant, and in all fairness this restaurant is fine dining (in terms of the food and how well it is executed).
The ambition with Lilla Ego was to create the perfect neighborhood restaurant where the food and produce are the main focus and the atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming.

Lilla Ego might not be heaven, but it’s definitely an unusually refreshing, professional and unpretentious little restaurant, with an atmosphere that makes you forget the everyday grind and an attitude that makes you smile – which is close enough to heaven for most.
The “unclassic pork tartare” (120 kronor) is mild and elegant in taste but colourful in looks, served with red beet purée and a crispy coat of fried sausage.
Of the main courses we eat, the crispy duck breast with variations of pumpkin and yellow beats (195 kronor) impresses with its tenderness, silky-smooth pumpkin purée and exquisite presentation, featuring long strips of pumpkin in gravity-defying formations.
We also eat the char with fried cauliflower purée, oyster mushrooms and king trumpet mushrooms, served with a wonderful sauce of cream, sugar and vinegar (240 kronor).
We taste a sophisticated, fresh creation called Apple, Apple, Apple – apple sorbet, thinly sliced apple and frozen apple rings on an almond base (125 kronor) – and a chocolate mousse that lingers in our minds for days after, with crispy honey, sea buckthorn purée, toffee ice cream and chocolate sauce (120 kronor).

The only problem is getting a seat.
People book months in advance, but locals say that if you drop in midweek, you can often score a seat at the bar.

Lilla Ego is on every foodie’s lips in Stockholm it seems.
The menus at Lilla Ego are written by hand, with marker pens on big flipboard sheets taped to the wall.
Lilla Ego has been described as the Stockholm equivalent to Pjoltergeist in Oslo, but I don’t agree much on this point.
However, where Pjoltergeist feels like a dungeon you crawl into through a hole in the wall, Lilla Ego is more open-spaced with huge windows that let daylight in.
Lilla Ego appeared to me as doing a modern twist on traditional Swedish ingredients.

Was a bit disappointed at the first visit, as I said, then I think the food is not quite lived up to the hype.
We shared the five dishes (3 starters, 2 main courses), which was on the verge of too much food, but we wanted to try as much as possible!
